Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made National Parks: Utah to Arizona
Day 1 Grand Junction, Colorado
Arrive in Grand Junction, where you are met by your driver and chauffeured to Moab, a renowned hub for outdoor adventure at the heart of Southeast Utah’s canyon country. Stop in downtown Moab for lunch before continuing to your overnight accommodations. Set just a block off Main Street, the HooDoo is the perfect location to experience Moab’s walkable downtown.
Today, meet your private driver-guide for a day of exploring the stunning Arches National Park. Hike and drive through the park, viewing unusual geologic formations such as the famed Delicate Arch, the Marching Men and the Eye of The Whale. After a picnic lunch at a scenic overlook, wander past seven distinct natural arches in the Devil’s Garden and check out the fossilized remains of real dinosaur tracks as well as breathtaking vistas of the surrounding desert terrain. This early afternoon, embark on a shared float trip through the Fishers Tower section of the Colorado River. Thrill to a few rapids and float past striking red rock formations, including Fishers Towers, Castle Rock, and the Priest and Nuns, in this area which has provided the backdrop for many western movies.
Travel overland to Monument Valley, the awe-inspiring landscape immortalized by director John Ford in many a classic western movie. Marked by rugged sandstone towers that jut into the clouds, this amazing area has been known as the “land of long shadows” by local tribes for centuries. Learn about the valley’s natural and human history as a local expert leads you to landmarks only accessible with a private, licensed Navajo guide. Following lunch, set out on a scenic drive toward your next hotel near the Grand Canyon. Located just two miles from the South Rim entrance to Grand Canyon National Park, the Squire Resort offers spacious, comfortable accommodations in an ideal location for families visiting the park.
Embark on a hike led by an expert naturalist guide for incredible views of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, the Colorado River and the Painted Desert. Revel in the natural flora, fauna and landscape of this astonishing world wonder. Next, enjoy lunch in the dining room of the historic Hotel Tovar, which is located directly on the canyon rim.
This morning, board a helicopter for a shared flight over the Grand Canyon. Take in unforgettable, sweeping views of the canyon from a unique perspective rarely experienced by visitors to the park. Afterward, depart with your private driver for Flagstaff, Arizona. Enjoy lunch before a private docent-led tour of the Museum of Northern Arizona. The museum contains the definitive collection of Southwest Native American art and artifacts. Your guide will lead you through the museum collection and the archives. Proceed to Sedona and continue to Amara Resort and Spa, your accommodation nestled along the lush green banks of beautiful Oak Creek.
Set out on a unique archaeological adventure today as you delve deeper into Arizona’s indigenous history. Explore the Honanki Heritage Site, 700-year-old cliff dwellings built by the Sinagua people, alongside your interpretive guide. Learn more about the Sinagua’s way of life as you traverse living spaces, community gathering areas, and burial grounds. As you observe pictographs and petroglyphs from between AD 600-1400, discuss the Sinagua’s methods of farming and hunting, their unique system of trading, and even myths about their mysterious disappearance. Return to Sedona through native forests in your off-roading vehicle. This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure, free to relax in your resort’s pool and spa or arrange for a private driver-guide to get in some additional touring and sightseeing in this remarkable desert setting.
After breakfast, your private driver will bring you to the Phoenix Airport to begin your journey home.
